I have also heard so many stories about how people started to play bagpipes, and I learnt that a lot of people were operating under some false assumptions before they took the first step to get started.  Here are some of the things they said, sound familiar ?

“I believed I was too old to start to learn the bagpipes”

“I thought I had no musical talent and that they I wasn’t a “musical” person.”

“I felt learning bagpipes would take too much time and effort.”

“I was under the impression bagpipes were too difficult to play.”

They couldn’t have been more wrong on these assumptions.

If you don’t have musical talent I’ve got good news for you– you don’t need it.

You just need time. Playing bagpipes is fundamentally about teaching your fingers to learn new things they aren’t used to doing. That’s it. It doesn’t take musical genius. It takes some time. If you set aside just 5 weeks with a bagpipe practise chanter I guarantee you’ll be playing your first tune no matter what you think is holding you back.  And within a few months, perhaps over a year you will be playing on bagpipes, maybe even playing in a Pipe Band or just for fun, whatever “floats your boat”

I love playing Bagpipes. When I think of the decisions I’ve made that have changed my life the most, picking up the bagpipes was one of the most inspiring and meaningful decisions I’ve ever made.

Here’s what your first 5 weeks can look like.

• Week 1. Join the Bagpiper guy and watch the first week’s video.  You will learn the Bagpipe Scale which only has 9 notes.  Not as hard as you may think ?  You would need to practise about 30 minutes a day.
• Week 2. You will move onto Lesson 2A.  Here you will learn the basic sub components of bagpipe embellishment.  They are called “gracenotes” and are simply single notes played quickly.  You will learn the “G” gracenote in week 2.
• Week 3. You will move onto Lesson 2B.  Here you will learn the basic sub components of bagpipe embellishment.  They are called “gracenotes” and are simply single notes played quickly.  You will learn the “D” gracenote in week 3.
• Week 4. You will move onto Lesson 2C.  Here you will learn the basic sub components of bagpipe embellishment.  They are called “gracenotes” and are simply single notes played quickly.  You will learn the “E” gracenote in week 4.
• Week 5. Now that you have mastered the scale and gracenotes you are ready for your first tune.  It is a very basic tune, but it is popular and well known and you will enjoy playing it.
